When we talk about cities we talk about people. But when we visit new cities we also have great impression visiting architecture, the monuments that reflect the history of the city. If you plan to make travel to Kherson or the Kherson area, this information will be useful for you.
The Kherson fortress occupies the territory that is almost 100 hectares.
The management of the building of the city building and fortresses was entrusted to the talented engineer, Colonel Nikolay Ivanovichu Korsakovu. The big sum of money was spent for building of this fortress.
Till nowadays only Ochakov and Moskow gates are left from the Kherson fortress with the bastions, one of the fortress well, the building of an arsenal, a powder cellar and the Ekaterina's cathedral with a bell tower. The most interesting from all of these constructions of the Kherson fortress complex is the Ekaterina's cathedral, that was put in 1781 on the place of the wooden church of Sacred Arhistratig Michael. To the West from the Ekaterina's cathedral there is a bell tower. To the Southeast from the Ekaterina's cathedral there is the park of Glory that was based in 1967.
The Greek suburb. Do you know that the first civil inhabitants of Kherson were Greeks? They moved to the Southern wild parts of steppes hoping to reconstruct the Greek empire.
On the outskirts of an old city in 1889 for the money of one local land owner Gichkothe the temple of Sretenija Gospodnja was built. Kherson is well-known for the green necklace. Having visited Kherson in summer, it is impossible to be kept from the temptation to make water excursion on the steam-ship on the river Dnepr. The local fauna amazes with its variety. There are many wild and rare birds. A lot of fish is found in the lowers of the river Dnepr. For all fans of archaeological and architectural relicts it will be interesting to drive along the ancient Kazikermensky path, that is the one of the oldest roads not only on the territory of Kherson but also in Ukraine, this path remembers Scythians. Berislav is not well known but it is one of the most ancient cities of Ukraine. Further from Berislav the road goes to the northeast to Novovorontsovke. This part of the trip is remarkable for its majestic views of the Kahovsk Sea. Near Berislava there is the village Zmievka, here you can find ancient Scythian settlement of the IV century B.C. - III centuries of our era. After Zmievka there is the village Chervonyj Majak where you can find the largest relic of Kherson region Grigory-Bizjukov monastery. It was based in 1782 by elder Feodosiy. Then going further up along the river Dnepr, we will stop on the high rocky right coast of the Kahovka water reservoir. Near the village Respublikanets on the cape there is the rests of the sixth Zaporizhska Sich - Kamensk.
And now let us talk about one of the youngest cities of Ukraine - New Kakhovka, it was based in 1950 on the place of the village Klyuchevogo. One of the most beautiful places of New Kakhovka is its quay with unique fresh air, the huge variety of flowers and purling spring sources. Annually in New Kakhovka the International festival of academic art «Vivat, Musica!» takes place.
In 1887 in "Askania Nova" the Old park was put. It reminds the real forest with fresh air, peace and pacification. The age of the majority of plantations is more than 100 years. The collection of dendrology park with different kinds of trees almost from each corner of the world (748 kinds) is extraordinary rich. The Visiting Card of are "stone structures".
Among the regions of Ukraine the Kherson area is unique that it is washed by two Seas – the Black Sea and the Azov Sea. Its Sea coast stretches more than on 200 kilometers. In the resort zone of the Kherson Black Sea Coast and Priazovye there are more than 300 sanitary establishments - sanatoria, boarding houses, tourist bases, children's camps. No doubt, you won't be indifferent to the most popular resorts of Kherson region (see also resort of Odessa, popular beaches ) - Skadovsk, Zheleznyi Port, Lazurnoe, Genichesk, Arabatska Strelka, also there are many "wild" beaches on the Sea coast!
Also don’t forget to visit the Ekaterina's cathedral, the Greek-Sofia church, Residence of the governor, the Piously-Duhovsky cathedral, Museum of local lore and Suvorov's House.
