Kherson city

The territory of modern Kherson has been occupied for a long time. In 1737 on the place of present Kherson there was the Russian fortification Alexander-Shants that was constructed during the Russian-Turkish war in 1735-1739.
The city of Kherson has been based by the decree of Ekaterina the 2nd from the 18th of June 1778. The city was created to protect the Southern boundaries of the Russian Empire. The name to the city was given in honor of Ancient Greek, and later after the Byzantine colony Chersonese. The fact that the new city has appeared on the map is directly connected with the name of G.A.Potemkin, it was him who showed on Alexander-Shants - the small Russian fortification that was located 30 km higher above the mouth of the river Dnepr as at the place where the city must be based. G.A.Potyomkin considered Kherson as his child and had great plans about this city. According to the legend Potyomkin has found out here the gates that were saved since the ancient times with the Greek inscription on the gates: “From here we will go to Byzantium”. From a long time ago Russia was named the foster daughter of Byzantium, Moscow was considered as the third Rome as Tsargrad (Constantinople) was considered to be the second. So, it is not surprising that during Russian-Turkish wars in the political circles the idea of revival of Byzantium was born, it was known under the name "Greek project". The main idea of this plan was to liberate the Balkan countries from Osmanskyi dominion, to banish Constantinople from Turks and to create the new state formation "Byzantium,” that had to submit the Russian throne. The part of “Greek project” was the foundation of Kherson and Katerina the II on the council had to crown her grandson Konstantin to be on the Byzantine throne.
